Morning!

I can’t believe it’s time for another installment of Friday Highs and Lows. If you want to read the previous weeks you can go here and here.

Highs

Building up my consignment store cash flow! With the weather warming up I realized that it was time to top up our consignment cash flow so I could start working on creating a spring and summer wardrobe for Margs. So, I spent a few days sorting through Margs’ winter clothes and toys and ended up dropping off a bunch of things that will help cover the cost of buying her enough outfits to last us through the summer. In this haul, I brought over her Infant Car Seat (Graco Click Connect 35 if you’re curious), a V-Tech Sit to Stand Walker, a fisher price ride on toy, and 2 boxes of clothing she’s outgrown.

We found a new groomer for our pup. Our dog is the anxious type and we’ve been struggling to find a groomer that would be patient with her. After trying a few different ones we finally found a lovely lady who grooms pups from her home. Puppy had an amazing experience and didn’t want to come home! Here she is with her new “summer” haircut!

Absolutely gorgeous weather! It’s been sunny and well above freezing all week and it’s unbelievable how a little sunshine can improve my mood and energy levels. Margs and I have been taking advantage and getting out for walks. The sun is setting later (around 5 pm) which makes the days longer and so much more cheerful. Spring is on the horizon and I couldn’t be happier! Sunday is supposed to climb up to 14 degrees!

Lows

Margs ate laundry soap at the end of last week. My mum was here visiting and we got caught up in a conversation and the next thing we knew Margs had powdered laundry soap all over her hands, face and inside her mouth. I washed her mouth out and promptly gave her a bottle of milk. I then spent the next 45 minutes trying to get through to Poison Control and then a local emergency health line in our area. Both agreed that an ER visit wasn’t necessary and that it was unlikely she ingested enough to cause issue. I was told to watch her for any unusual symptoms but that she should be just fine. Thankfully, Margs experienced no side effects. We’re now in the process of child proofing this place – she’s so mobile and fast that we’re not taking any chances.

Basement reno costs are getting a little higher than we anticipated. I haven’t discussed much about what’s going on within this TTBH have I? When we bought this home, we knew we were going to transform the basement into a small 1 bedroom apartment for my mum. Her lease is up at the end of April and she’ll be moving in with us. Work on the basement has been slow because we have an arrangement with a contractor where we are saving on labor costs (FYI we bartered a hot tub for the labor costs of finishing our basement. Said tub came with the house and we did not want to keep it). But, because of this the process has been long and drawn out. We’re nearing the end which is wonderful but I was calculating the costs of materials and my heart sank a little. We’re about 3000$ over budget but considering we aren’t paying anything for the labor I suppose it’s still an awesome deal.

We’ve reverted to co-sleeping. I hate hate hate that we’re back here. We had made so much progress with Margs and then one night she just would not have it and exhaustion on our part took over and we put her right back into our bed. Since then, she’s refused to sleep anywhere but our bed. We’re going to keep trying but this week she’s slept in our bed more often than not. This kid seems to have some sort of sensor – the moment you try to put her down in her cot she freaks out.

What are your highs and lows for this fine week of February 20th?

  1. For the co-sleeping, don’t worry too much about it. My oldest son refused to sleep anywhere but in our bed until he was three – if you put him in his crib, he would scream and cry until he threw up. But once he was three he started being able to sleep by himself, and now at 13 he’s just fine. She’ll sleep by herself eventually, I can guarantee it!

  2. Your dog is adorable. My son was awesome at sleeping in his own until he turned 3. He is 4 now and spent last night with us. I need a bigger bed!

Highs- finally had a dream come true and took horseback jumping lessons. Wyatt got a pet guinea pig and named him Wyatt. He adores that thing. The weather has been glorious.

Lows -Wyatt was in our bed wed night and woke up complaining of his tummy. He then vomited all over the bed.

  3. By giving in, you are training Mags that persistence is the key to getting what she wants… your stamina has to exceed hers for training like this to succeed. (That said: there is no engraved rule that says exactly WHEN autonomous sleeping must occur. Discuss with her (kinda) and Hubster, pick a date, and then you need to be stoic and solid. This is your marital bed; how does hanky panky occur with a third [litle] person in the bed?? Think longer term.)

      1. Very true… I remember going out in the back yard and screaming in frustration and exhaustion. More than once.
Chin up, hon… In a very short while she will be grown and moved away and you will cry, remembering her as a sweet little baby/toddler/child/teen. Missing the days when…

  4. I love that you do this 🙂 Inspiring and something I may have to start as well!! Practicing gratitude is awesome!!!

Also, how cute is your puppy? (I was reading along, scrolling, and when her face popped up from the bottom of my screen I squealed a little bit 🙂 )

  5. My daughter co-slept with us until she was 10 or 11. I loved it and I miss it. It’s not for everyone, but perhaps your daughter just needs more nurturing right now. 🙂

      1. Co-sleeping is truly a sacrifice. Some children have no issue finding comfort in themselves, but others need more nurturing. You have to find what works for you and your child. Never feel guilty about giving her what she needs. It does exhaust you sometimes because you don’t get enough sleep sometimes, but what’s truly important her her ability to attach in healthy ways. ❤ Hang in there! 🙂

  6. We’ve been trying to sell outgrown baby stuff through Facebook buy/sell/trade groups but it has been hard deciding what to get rid of and what to hoard away JUST IN CASE we decide to have another baby. We have the graco click connect system, too, and I’d hate to have to buy another one one day… But its also big to store and the cash up front would be nice!

As for co-sleeping, I think it’s pretty normal to go back and forth between crib and your bed every now and then. Maybe she’s just going through a tough developmental phase and needs the extra comfort, but will grow out of it soon and be back in her cot with no fuss no muss. Fingers crossed!

    1. We opted to get rid of the car seat because it has an expiry date and was taking up a huge amount of room in our garage. We’re keeping the stroller and if in the future (big big if) we need to get a car seat we will likely buy one second hand. Margs only used hers for approximately 10 months so it would be very feasible to get one that’s been pre-loved before it expires.

  7. It sounds like you have had a very productive week. Way to go on all the organizing and sending things to the consignment shop! I got 3 bins emptied from my huge post-moving stack–an on-going goal until the day I’m actually done!! Still, it feels good to keep plugging away.

  8. Kids are so resilient, meanwhile poor moms we are freaking! Glad she is okay! Our daughter is technically still a cosleeper I say technically because we took one of the rails off of her bed and now it is right on the side of our bed. At first she would fall asleep in bed with us and then I would roll her over to her bed. Now she crawls up in our bed then climbs in hers and as long as I rub her back she goes to sleep in her bed and we get to enjoy sleeping without a moving, kicking child.
Low for me this week was when I wrote the letter to my daughter lol
The high was today when my mom wrote a letter to me 🙂

  9. Love love love the pup’s hair cut! Sorry about Margs getting into things, kids are so curious! Glad to hear she’s ok though. I think with all of the things kids put in their mouths they end up getting a bit of an immunity to some things 🙂 I was glad it was warmer this past week too. JT and I made it out for a walk by the river, which was wonderful, but then the next day it snowed! Gotta love crazy weather! It hasn’t been great for sleeping either, I think the low pressure system moving in over the past few days has messed with my head a bit. I’m gearing up for vacation next week, so I’m trying to get all of my responsibilities out of the way so I’m free for my vacation…not going anywhere, but celebrating my parent’s 30th wedding anniversary, so that’s exciting! Have a good week!
